Representative image. In Muradnagar, Cumilla, rival assailants hacked an aunt and her nephew to death following a land dispute. This double murder has sparked fear and tension in the area.

The incident occurred around 7:30 PM on Monday (September 14) in Daranipara village under Babutipara Union of the upazila.

The deceased are Manjurul Alam Titu (35), son of Md. Bachchu Mia of Daranipara village, and Khaleda Akter (70), wife of Jasim Uddin from the same village. They were aunt and nephew by relation.

According to locals, a dispute over land had been ongoing between the brother and sister for a long time. Following this, on Monday evening, Khaleda Akter’s brother, Mostak Ahmed Abu Mia, arrived with a group of associates, attacked Khaleda Akter and Manjurul Alam Titu, and inflicted severe, bleeding wounds using sharp *da* (machetes). The injured were subsequently rushed to the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex (at Gouripur) in critical condition, where doctors declared both of them dead.

Titu’s mother-in-law, Josna Begum, and another relative, Md. Shafiqul Islam, stated that the killings stemmed from the long-standing land dispute.

Md. Saiful Islam, In-charge of the Gouripur Police Investigation Center, said that upon receiving the news, police arrived at the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex in Gouripur and found the two bodies. He added that further action would be taken in accordance with legal procedures.

Md. Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muradnagar Police Station, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the murders were likely motivated by the land dispute between the siblings. Legal action will follow.
