Rizvi calls for an end to extortion in the transport sector

Staff Reporter //

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has called for an end to the long-standing anarchy and extortion in the road transport sector—which prevailed during the era of fascism—and urged for the creation of an environment that brings relief to the people. He expressed hope that the new committee of the Transport Workers Federation would play a pivotal role in eliminating the mafia-style control over the road sector and restoring legal order.

He made these remarks on Thursday morning (October 8) while speaking to journalists after laying floral wreaths at the graves of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, accompanied by leaders of the new committee of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stated that immediate, effective measures are required to dismantle the so-called mafia-style control that has developed around the road transport sector.

He expressed hope that the new leadership of the workers’ federation would be vocal in bringing about change and overcoming the sector’s long-standing stagnation. At the same time, he expects them to play a leading role in safeguarding the interests of ordinary workers and improving the quality of passenger services.

Emphasizing the modernization of the transport sector, he added that the sector would be revamped through innovative ideas. He stated that the long-standing chaos would be eliminated, road transport operations would be fully legalized, and a new benchmark for passenger service would be established.

Criticizing the past, Rizvi remarked that once politicians assume responsibility to address political instability, the persistent anarchy of the last 17 years will come to a permanent end.

Earlier, leaders and activists of the organization—led by the new President and former MP Nazim Uddin Alam, Executive President Mortajul Karim Badru, and General Secretary Rezaul Islam Raju—arrived at the gravesites with banners and a procession. Subsequently, Rizvi, accompanied by the new committee leaders, paid tribute at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
