Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle paid a courtesy call on opposition leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.<\/p>\n
The courtesy call was held at the opposition leader’s office at the National Parliament Building on Monday (June 15) afternoon.<\/p>\n
The meeting discussed sustainable solutions to the Rohingya crisis and the development of Bangladesh’s energy sector.<\/p>\n
The Australian High Commissioner was also present at the time, along with the First Secretary (Political) of the Australian High Commission, Mr. Harry Thomson and First Secretary (Political) Anna Peterson.<\/p>\n
Present with the opposition leader at the time were Barrister Mir Ahmad bin Qasem Arman, foreign affairs advisor to the opposition leader and member of parliament, MPs Marzia Akhtar and Mardia Momtaz, and foreign affairs advisor Ali Ahmad Mabrur.<\/p>\n
The meeting discussed the upcoming visit of the opposition leader to Australia, the role of the government and the opposition in making democracy more meaningful in the post-national elections, and various ways to further strengthen parliamentary democracy.<\/p>\n
It was expressed that democracy cannot be effective and vibrant without the active participation of the opposition. Both sides also exchanged views on the announced national budget and the shadow budget proposed by the opposition.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed in detail a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis and the development of Bangladesh’s economic potential. In particular, the issue of developing the energy sector received special importance in the meeting.<\/p>\n
At one stage of the discussion, the Australian High Commissioner praised the constructive role of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the parliament. The two sides also discussed ways to further advance issues of mutual bilateral interest in the future.<\/p>\n
In addition, the meeting also exchanged views on the possible cooperation of the Australian government in implementing the skills development program in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
