Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that past fascist forces regarded the brothers and sisters of the Sanatan faith in this country merely as their \u2018vote bank\u2019\u2014a misconception and myth that the Sanatan community shattered during the 13th National Parliamentary Election.<\/p>\n
He made these remarks on Friday (September 4) afternoon while participating in a Janmashtami rally that began at the Palashi intersection in the Dhaka University area.<\/p>\n
The Home Minister noted that the Constitution of Bangladesh entrusts the state with the responsibility of ensuring the practice of all religions and religious freedom, and the state is committed to guaranteeing this.<\/p>\n
He said, “The Constitution explicitly states that there shall be no discrimination based on religion. Provisions have been made to ensure religious freedom, including the liberty for people of all faiths to establish places of worship and for the authorities of those places to operate freely.”<\/p>\n
The Home Minister added, “We do not wish to limit this merely to the text of the Constitution. We are committed to ensuring this harmony and freedom in reality, and we have made that declaration.”<\/p>\n
He continued, “One may have a religious identity, but that identity is not the primary factor here. We wish to exist here with the identity of citizens. All citizens of Bangladesh\u2014whether Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, or from ethnic minority groups\u2014will freely observe their respective religious practices and rituals. However, in terms of nationality, we all stand as citizens of Bangladesh.”<\/p>\n
The Home Minister stated, “Harmony will prevail among us; that alone will be our defining identity. That is why we say\u2014as our leader has declared\u2014’Bangladesh First.’ If Bangladesh comes first, then we are Bangladeshis first; our religious, cultural, and ethnic identities come thereafter. We are Bangladeshis first, and Bangladesh belongs to everyone.”<\/p>\n
He further urged that no one should identify themselves as a ‘minority’ as free citizens of Bangladesh. Everyone should identify based on citizenship rather than religion, recognizing themselves as citizens with equal rights in this country.<\/p>\n
The Home Minister concluded, “So, what shall we say from today onwards? We will maintain religious harmony.” We will maintain social harmony and peace. There will no longer be any need to even mention the term ‘communal harmony.’ Instead, it will be about religious harmony, coexistence, and social peace and harmony.<\/p>\n
