Tasnim Rifat, a Bangladesh Army soldier (Gunner) who died in an accident during firing practice in Hathazari, Chattogram, has been laid to rest beside his mother’s grave.

On Thursday (September 10), following the *Janaza* (funeral prayer) held after the Zuhr prayers in Bindarampur village of Damkura Union, Paba Upazila, Rajshahi, he was buried with military honors at the family graveyard.

Earlier that morning, Rifat’s body was transported from Chattogram to Rajshahi Cantonment via a special Bangladesh Army helicopter. Subsequently, an ambulance carried his remains to his home in Bindarampur village, Damkura Union, Paba Upazila.

A pall of gloom descended upon relatives and villagers as the body arrived at the home. People from surrounding areas gathered to catch a final glimpse of their loved one. The atmosphere became heavy with the weeping and wailing of relatives.

Some relatives tried to console Rifat’s father, retired government employee Asadul Islam, while others broke down in tears themselves. Sounds of wailing drifted from inside the house, and the faces of those standing silently outside also bore the marks of grief. Rifat’s mother had passed away from cancer three years ago. Just as the family was beginning to return to a normal life after overcoming the grief of his mother’s death, this other tragic news arrived.

Later, Rifat’s *Janaza* was held in the presence of senior army officials and with the participation of family members, relatives, and thousands of villagers. Following the prayer, the Bangladesh Army accorded him a guard of honor with military protocol. After the military formalities, he was taken to the family graveyard, where he was laid to rest beside his mother’s grave.

Tasnim Rifat was a member of the 15 Independent Armoured Squadron of the Bangladesh Army’s Armoured Corps.

The accident occurred around 12:00 PM on Wednesday (September 9) during a tank firing exercise at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram. Two soldiers, including Tasnim Rifat, were killed instantly when a shell exploded inside their tank during a training exercise.

His family and relatives are devastated by the death of Tasnim Rifat at the age of just 28. He is survived by his wife and a daughter, who is approximately two and a half years old. Loved ones are grieving not only for the loss of Rifat but also for the future of his wife and young daughter. The faces of those who attended the funeral prayers and burial to bid him a final farewell bore the marks of deep sorrow.

Meanwhile, the final rites for the soldier concluded with funeral prayers and burial conducted with full military honors.

Relatives stated that Rifat was the second of four siblings. He had been a source of his family’s hopes and dreams since childhood. He later joined the Bangladesh Army and, through his service, became a figure of pride for his family. Professionally, Rifat was known for his responsible nature and calm demeanor.

Rifat had a small family of his own; he lived with his wife and young daughter in government quarters at the Chattogram Cantonment.

Although his duties prevented him from visiting home frequently, he maintained regular contact with his family. His family members and relatives are finding it impossible to come to terms with such a sudden and tragic death.

Stay tuned for regular news updates and share your thoughts.

Rajshahi Correspondent // Photo: Collected.
