He made these remarks in a message issued on Monday (September 14) on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy. The theme for this year’s International Day of Democracy is “Raising Hands and Voices\u2014Fostering Agency and Ownership through Deliberative Democracy.”<\/p>\n
In the message, the Prime Minister extended sincere greetings to the people of Bangladesh and all democracy-loving people across the globe on this occasion, expressing support for their democratic and human rights.<\/p>\n
Tarique Rahman stated that the core philosophy of democracy lies in establishing freedom of speech and expression, equality, human dignity, and social justice for the people within the state and society. Democratic rights are not limited merely to the exercise of the right to vote; rather, ensuring the political and economic empowerment of the people is essential to establishing democracy on a sustainable and institutional foundation. To that end, the government is firmly committed to restoring the religious, political, social, and cultural rights of the people in the country.<\/p>\n
Since independence, the democratic rights of the people in Bangladesh have been curtailed at various times. Noting that democracy had been killed, the Prime Minister recalled that the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence, martyred President Ziaur Rahman, had introduced multi-party democracy in the country and restored freedom of speech, personal liberty, and freedom of the press. He observed that fascist rule and exploitation were subsequently re-established after stripping the people of their democratic and political rights. Through a continuous struggle spanning over a decade and a half, the heroic students and the public brought an end to fascist rule in the country via a bloody mass uprising.<\/p>\n
Highlighting that the BNP has consistently stood for democracy\u2014whether in government or in opposition\u2014he noted that in a fascism-free Bangladesh, the people have entrusted the responsibility of governing the state to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) through a free, fair, and impartial election. Tarique Rahman stated that we aim to build a Bangladesh that ensures the prosperity and self-reliance of future generations, an inclusive and liberal political environment, and social stability and justice.<\/p>\n
On International Day of Democracy, he paid tribute to the democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh and across the globe.
