Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has remarked that drugs and gambling act as the primary driving forces behind most of the heinous and sensational crimes occurring in society. He stated that merely arresting, trying, and punishing offenders is insufficient to fully control crime; instead, the root causes of crime must be identified and addressed. Research indicates a link between drug addiction and gambling in many serious crimes.<\/p>\n
The Home Minister made these remarks on Wednesday while addressing the 43rd founding anniversary ceremony of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB), held at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.<\/p>\n
The Minister noted that crime is merely an external symptom; one must investigate the root causes and strike at the very source. Alongside punishing offenders, the underlying causes of crime must be analyzed. He emphasized that if solutions are implemented at the source, it will be possible to effectively reduce crime rates in society.<\/p>\n
Pointing out that the nature of crime has evolved over time, the Home Minister observed that crimes have now become digital and reliant on modern technology. In this changing landscape, he stressed the need for a responsible and objective role from the media and journalists\u2014alongside a modern legal framework\u2014to combat and prevent crime.<\/p>\n
He also announced initiatives to soon establish modern cyber security units to enhance police capabilities. He outlined plans to set up modern cyber security units and laboratories at Police Headquarters, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and divisional levels. The Home Minister also expressed the view that laws need to be updated to match the changing nature of crime, noting that it is not always possible to tackle new types of offenses using outdated laws. He emphasized the necessity of enacting new laws and amending existing ones to meet contemporary demands. During his speech, he cited the successful measures taken to curb acid attacks during the tenure of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia as an example of effective action.<\/p>\n
Describing the media as the mirror of society, the Minister stated that if journalists properly fulfill their responsibilities toward society, it would be possible to significantly reduce crime within both society and the state. He stated that the active participation of journalists\u2014alongside the government and law enforcement agencies\u2014is essential to realizing the state’s objectives and society’s expectations.<\/p>\n
At the event, in addition to the presentation of certificates recognizing the work of crime reporters, he assured that the possibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Police Department issuing certificates for reporting on high-risk assignments and investigative journalism would be examined.<\/p>\n
Speaking at CRAB’s 43rd founding anniversary, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed remarked that the police and the media are allies; their respective responsibilities complement each other in serving the public interest. The media plays a vital role in conveying police activities to the public, thereby aiding in crime prevention and the assurance of public safety. New challenges\u2014such as technology-driven crimes and online fraud\u2014are emerging in the current era. Truthful, objective, and responsible journalism is crucial in raising public awareness about these issues.<\/p>\n
Presided over by CRAB President Mirza Mehdi Tamal, the event was addressed by, among others, Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Masud and the Prime Minister’s Assistant (Political)\u2014holding the rank of Secretary\u2014Md. Rashed Khan. The program was moderated by CRAB General Secretary M. M. Badsha.
