He stated, “Our call to the Indian government is that this is a vital condition for improving ties with Bangladesh. The brutality of Sheikh Hasina was not limited to the events of July; it persisted for years, involving numerous individuals.”

The Adviser made these remarks yesterday, Tuesday, while responding to journalists’ questions at a weekly press briefing held at the Secretariat regarding the progress of various government ministries and contemporary issues.
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman mentioned that the matter had been raised seriously during a courtesy meeting with the Indian High Commissioner. He emphasized that the Indian government should seriously consider repatriating all accused individuals currently residing in India to foster effective relations with Bangladesh. “They are living lives of comfort abroad while making statements that hurt the sentiments of the Bangladeshi people. I hope the Indian government will understand the feelings and sensitivities of the people of Bangladesh and hand them over,” he said.

Stating that ensuring justice for all crimes committed during the Awami League’s tenure is a top priority for the current government, the Information Adviser affirmed that there would be no compromise in this regard. He remarked, “This is a matter for the courts, and the case will proceed at its own pace. There is no question of the government harboring any bias—either favorable or unfavorable—towards Dr. Muhammad Yunus or anyone else.”

Referring to the High Court’s order regarding the waiver of Tk 666 crore in taxes for Grameen Kalyan and two related writ petitions, a journalist asked whether the government had any specific message concerning the individuals behind Grameen Kalyan in light of these circumstances. In response, Zahed Ur Rahman stated, “Please note that this is a matter concerning the court, and there was a slight misunderstanding. In accordance with the court’s verdict, the concerned parties must pay the tax; the government has no role to play in this regard.”

Regarding the practice of addressing officials as “Sir” in government offices, he remarked that instead of making it mandatory to use the term “Sir,” a shift in the mindset of both officials and the general public is needed to ensure the delivery of citizen services.

Dr. Zahed mentioned that initiatives are underway to bring battery-operated auto-rickshaws under specific safety and route regulations rather than banning them outright. He explained that the livelihoods and daily commutes of many people are linked to these auto-rickshaws, so the government does not wish to shut them down completely; however, a policy is being rapidly formulated to regulate their safety and routes.

Read the news and share your views.

Special Correspondent // Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting, has cited the extradition of fugitive and convicted individuals—including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the now-banned Awami League—as a crucial condition for easing relations between the two countries.
