Law Minister Anisul Huq stated, “During the amendment of the National Freedom Fighters Council (Jamuka) Act, Jamaat-e-Islami demanded the exclusion of their name from the definition of freedom fighters. He made these remarks yesterday, Friday, at the launch of the book *Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami: Its History and Politics*, authored by the late Barrister Abdur Razzaq\u2014a former Jamaat leader and senior Supreme Court lawyer\u2014at Lakeshore Grand in the capital. Academics, researchers, lawyers, journalists, and other relevant individuals attended the event. The book was published by University Press Limited (UPL).<\/p>\n
The late Barrister Abdur Razzaq, a former Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat, had urged the party’s top leadership to apologize to the nation for the crimes committed in 1971. Information regarding this matter is highlighted in his published book. Bringing this topic into the discussion, Law Minister Anisul Huq said, “In light of the political philosophy and principles he followed, Barrister Razzaq drafted a statement in 2016 in which he attempted to bring Jamaat’s role in 1971 before the nation.” He added, “Had that statement been signed in 2016, many questions surrounding Jamaat could have been resolved.”<\/p>\n
Anisul Huq further remarked, “This published book discusses various aspects of Jamaat. I had expected that the Jamaat leaders who are known as prominent lawyers in the Supreme Court or within our legal circles would be present at today’s discussion. None of them could attend. This reflects their inadequacy, failure, narrow-mindedness, and limitations. They could have attended and expressed disagreement with the book, for that is the essence of democracy. Just as it is not necessarily true that one must agree with everything Barrister Razzaq said, it is equally incorrect to be unable to accept criticism regarding him.” “This book contains criticism of the BNP; that is fine, and we accept it. If we cannot embrace such criticism, we will not be able to move forward as a society.”<\/p>\n
He said, “The National Freedom Fighters Council Act, 2022, provides a definition of ‘Freedom Fighters.’ That definition explicitly mentions the opposition mounted by Jamaat-e-Islami against the independence-seeking people of Bangladesh in 1971. Amendments were introduced to this in 2025. When we sought to implement it during the 2026 parliamentary session, the matter was referred to a special committee. At that time, a request was made on behalf of the party to see if the name ‘Jamaat’ could be excluded from the text.”<\/p>\n
The Law Minister stated, “The amendment addressed the question: ‘Who is a Freedom Fighter?’ The definition states that those who struggled for the country’s independence in 1971 by opposing the Pakistan Army, the Pakistani occupation forces, Razakars, Al-Badr, Jamaat-e-Islami, the Muslim League, and the Nizam-e-Islam Party are Freedom Fighters. Jamaat demanded that their name be removed from that list. We maintained that we could not deny historical truth. At one stage of the discussion, the terms were modified to read ‘the then Jamaat-e-Islami,’ ‘the then Muslim League,’ and ‘the then Nizam-e-Islam.’ Subsequently, the bill was presented in Parliament. As you know, passing a law in Parliament involves ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes. No member of Jamaat-e-Islami cast a ‘No’ vote. This is on record.”<\/p>\n
Describing the book authored by the late Barrister Abdur Razzaq as an “encyclopedia” during the event, the Law Minister remarked, “To me, this book did not seem like a mere work of literature or research; rather, it felt like the encyclopedia of a living human being.” “This book is a reflection of how Barrister Razzaq perceived society through the lens of his own life and philosophy.”<\/p>\n
The Law Minister remarked, “One might disagree with the concept of establishing an Islamic state system; however, viewed from the perspective of values \u200b\u200band governance, I consider the book written by Barrister Abdur Razzaq to be a work of prose penned by a jurist.”<\/p>\n
He added, “The idea of \u200b\u200bimposing Islamic rule is a flawed approach. Rather, a state formed and governed based on Islamic values\u2014derived from within society itself\u2014represents the true path to establishing an Islamic state system.”<\/p>\n
