Meteorologists state that it may subsequently intensify in stages—evolving into a low-pressure area, a deep depression, and eventually a cyclone. The potential cyclone is most likely to track towards Odisha, India. Rainfall in Bangladesh may increase after September 23 as a result. If the cyclone forms, it will be named ‘Arnab’—a name proposed by Bangladesh.

Md. Omar Faruq, a meteorologist at the Department of Meteorology, said yesterday (Friday) that the low-pressure area could form over the North Andaman Sea either today (Saturday) or tomorrow (Sunday). It is likely to intensify into a depression later. If environmental conditions remain favorable, it could even develop into a cyclone. However, nothing definitive can be said yet regarding its trajectory or intensity; initially, it appears most likely to move towards Odisha.

Friday’s forecast from the Department of Meteorology indicated that the axis of the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and the central part of Bangladesh to Assam. A portion of this trough extends to the North Bay of Bengal. However, the monsoon is currently less active over Bangladesh and weak over the North Bay of Bengal. Consequently, light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, may occur today (Saturday) in some areas of the Rangpur and Chattogram divisions, and in one or two places across the Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions. Day and night temperatures across the country are likely to remain nearly unchanged. The trend of rainfall or thundershowers may increase over the next five days.

Meanwhile, citing India’s meteorological department, various Indian media outlets have reported that a cyclonic circulation has formed over the North Andaman Sea, near the coast of Thailand. It may intensify into a depression by this evening (Saturday). There are concerns that it could subsequently intensify further and evolve into a cyclone. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic circulation is likely to intensify into a deep depression by September 21 or 22. It may then move towards the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha. Consequently, warnings have been issued for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in coastal Andhra Pradesh from Saturday through Monday. Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal may also experience rainfall due to this system.

Rainfall has already commenced in various parts of West Bengal, driven by the cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal and the monsoon trough extending from Saurashtra to the Bay of Bengal and from Sikkim to North Odisha. The IMD has indicated that several districts in West Bengal could experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph through Saturday. Given the situation, a ‘yellow alert’ for rain remains in effect for multiple districts across both North and South Bengal until Saturday.

While various weather models predict the possibility of this cyclonic circulation intensifying into a cyclone, the IMD has so far only indicated the likelihood of a depression forming. Therefore, it is not yet certain whether a cyclone will actually develop.

If the cyclone forms, it will be named ‘Arnab’—a name proposed by Bangladesh. ‘Arnab’ is one of the names submitted by Bangladesh for the list approved by the World Meteorological Organization and the relevant regional committee for cyclones in the North Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal. The word ‘Arnab’ means ‘ocean’ or ‘sea’; the Bangla Academy dictionary also defines it as ‘ocean’.

Cyclone names are not determined based on a storm’s path, intensity, or potential damage at the time of its formation. Instead, a pre-determined list of names proposed by various countries exists for the North Indian Ocean region. When a new cyclone forms, a name is assigned sequentially from that list. Consequently, if this system intensifies into a cyclone, ‘Arnab’ will be used as the next name in the sequence proposed by Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, hazy, fog-like conditions have been observed in various parts of the country over the past two days. When asked about the cause, meteorologist Md. Omar Faruk stated that various regions of the country have experienced rainfall over the past few days. Such fog can appear temporarily after a spell of rain ends. This fog is likely to clear up within the next one or two days.

Share your opinion.

Online Correspondent // A low-pressure area is likely to form over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining regions at the beginning of the month of Ashwin.
