Member of Parliament (MP) for Satkhira-4, Gazi Nazrul Islam, and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, have been detained on allegations of abetting the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.<\/p>\n
Md. Ibne Mizan, Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon Division, confirmed the matter to *Samakal* around 1:30 AM on Monday. He stated, “MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, have been detained on preliminary charges of abetting suicide.”<\/p>\n
Police sources indicate that a case regarding the alleged abetment of suicide is being filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The case is being lodged by the deceased Mariam Khatun’s father. Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife have already been taken into police custody. As Gazi Nazrul Islam is a Member of Parliament, specific legal procedures must be followed for his formal arrest; he may be shown as arrested once these formalities are completed, likely by Monday.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Nazrul Islam had submitted his bail bond to a Dhaka court yesterday after securing bail from the High Court in an attempted murder case filed by his second wife’s maternal uncle. Once the current bail term expires, MP Nazrul\u2014who was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami\u2014is expected to surrender and seek bail again.<\/p>\n
Police stated that MP Nazrul Islam lived with his wife in flat number 203 on the second floor of Building No. 5. Yesterday evening, police arrived at the scene and observed Mariam’s body hanging from the ceiling fan through the room’s window. A security officer at the NAM Bhaban (MP housing complex) had informed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station about the incident. Subsequently, the police visited the site. Forensic units from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were summoned to collect evidence; local police did not enter the room until their arrival. The body was recovered around 10:00 PM and sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for an autopsy.<\/p>\n
Monirul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said that police went to the location after receiving information from a security officer at the NAM Bhaban. The body of the MP’s second wife was subsequently found hanging there. Nazrul Islam was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from the Satkhira-4 constituency as a nominee of Jamaat-e-Islami. Last July, a video capturing a private moment of his\u2014filmed at a residential hotel in Moghbazar\u2014circulated on social media; a 19-year-old woman named Mariam was seen with him in the footage. Nazrul Islam later stated that Mariam was his second wife. Subsequently, on July 22, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party. The party also sent letters to the Speaker, the Election Commission, and other relevant authorities, urging them to take action against him.<\/p>\n
