A sedition case has been filed against Md. Rakibul Hasan, the former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He was arrested in connection with the case on Thursday. Later that evening, the Detective Branch (DB) produced him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka and sought a seven-day remand; the court subsequently granted a five-day remand.<\/p>\n
Rakibul Hasan had previously been withdrawn from his post as OC and attached to the Central Reserve Office of the Headquarters and Administration Division\u2014following an office order signed by the DMP Commissioner on September 17\u2014after an audio recording surfaced in which he made remarks concerning the government, the police, and various other forces.<\/p>\n
Md. Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch\/DB) of the DMP, stated that the police filed the sedition case against Rakibul Hasan at Cantonment Police Station. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.<\/p>\n
A press release issued by the DMP\u2019s Media and Public Relations Division on Thursday night cited allegations that OC Rakibul Hasan had disseminated anti-state and provocative statements on social media. A remand application was submitted to the court seeking seven days of police custody for intensive interrogation to ensure a proper investigation and to uncover the masterminds behind the incident.<\/p>\n
Nazmul Haque, Assistant Commissioner (Cantonment Zone, Gulshan Division, DMP), told the media that the Inspector (Operations) of Cantonment Police Station filed the case as the plaintiff.<\/p>\n
Relevant sources indicate that an investigation committee had been formed to question the OC. The three-member committee comprised one DB official and two officials from DMP Headquarters. Following the receipt of the investigation report, the sedition case was filed against him at Cantonment Police Station, and he was arrested in connection with it. It was not the DB that arrested him; rather, he was arrested from the Central Reserve Office (CRO).<\/p>\n
Recently, an audio recording featuring the former OC of Cantonment Police Station, Rakibul Hasan, went viral on social media. The recording captured a conversation regarding the potential return to Bangladesh of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2014who fled to India after being ousted during the mass uprising led by students and the public. In the audio, he is heard saying, “I know Sheikh Hasina is coming in December. Nothing will actually happen; absolutely nothing will happen. You can imagine how weak the street police are\u2014terribly weak. She should come. December is too late; she should have come this month. If she arrives, this police force won’t be able to do a thing.”<\/p>\n
In the audio clip circulating on social media, he is heard criticizing the government, the administration, the army, and the police force. He also alleges political affiliations among senior police officers and claims that money changes hands for the posting of Officers-in-Charge (OCs).<\/p>\n
In the audio, the police officer is heard saying, “All the senior officers are backing the BNP. We aren’t doing that. All the seniors are with the BNP, but we aren’t. We didn’t join the department for this kind of thing. You lot will wine, dine, and indulge yourselves while we sit here and do all the work\u2014that simply won’t do.”<\/p>\n
The audio also mentions that the driver of a senior police officer named Monir is handling the posting of police station OCs. He is heard saying, “Can this be tolerated? What more is there to say? Those getting postings are paying him (Monir), and the postings are being finalized by morning.”<\/p>\n
Addressing that senior officer, the speaker in the audio remarks that he ought to feel ashamed. He notes that the officer previously had no job, but suggests that by holding his current position for just one year, he could easily amass 100 crore taka.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in an order issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Inspector Muhammad Gias Uddin has been appointed as the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station.<\/p>\n
