Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that he supports a return to the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the US and Iran in June. This was reported by China’s state news agency, Xinhua. According to the report, Xi made these remarks during a meeting held at the White House on Thursday morning (local time).<\/p>\n
The June MOU had outlined provisions for halting hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade, alongside initiating talks aimed at achieving long-term peace. However, the agreement collapsed after fighting resumed.<\/p>\n
Since then, the talks have remained at a standstill. Nevertheless, Beijing\u2014Tehran’s top trading partner\u2014has long been viewed as a potential mediator in these negotiations.<\/p>\n
Call to Reject Taiwan Independence
\nSeparately, Xinhua reported that Xi told Trump, “China’s position regarding territorial integrity is absolutely clear.”<\/p>\n
The agency further stated that Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged Trump to oppose Taiwan’s independence and to handle the matter prudently.<\/p>\n
US foreign policy has long sought to balance support for the self-governing island (Taiwan) with maintaining relations with Beijing. Conversely, Beijing has consistently claimed Taiwan as an integral part of its territory.<\/p>\n
