Students of Sylhet Engineering College are continuing their protest, demanding to be released from the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Technical Education and placed under Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n
Due to the students’ blockade, at least 20 people\u2014including the transferred principal, 14 teachers, and 6\u20137 staff members\u2014have been confined within the college’s administrative building for nearly 48 consecutive hours.<\/p>\n
Describing the severe hardship caused by this prolonged confinement, the college’s acting principal, Associate Professor Md. Asaduzzaman, said at 9 PM yesterday (Monday), “We are in great distress. We have spent two days confined in the same clothes. We are barely surviving on whatever food the students pass through the windows. The agitated students are not responding to any appeals or requests.”<\/p>\n
Established in 2007, the college has approximately 1,000 students studying across three departments: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering.<\/p>\n
The protesting students argue that remaining under the Directorate of Technical Education severely undermines the quality and distinctiveness of their BSc Engineering degrees. Therefore, to safeguard the prestige of the degree, all academic and administrative activities\u2014including examinations, laboratory sessions, and classes\u2014will remain suspended indefinitely until a formal notification is issued by the Ministry of Education. The entire campus will also remain shut down.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, amidst the ongoing protest, a notification signed by Sajjad Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division under the Ministry of Education, was issued last Sunday. It ordered the transfer of acting principal Md. Asaduzzaman to Faridpur Engineering College. The same notification appointed Md. Sahid Iqbal, an Associate Professor at Mymensingh Engineering College, as the new principal of Sylhet Engineering College.<\/p>\n
Expressing frustration, a fourth-year student involved in the protest said, “We have completely rejected this transfer order from the government. Until our core demand is met, we will neither allow the transferred principal\u2014who is currently confined\u2014to leave the campus nor permit the newly appointed principal to enter it.” Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was held on Monday night at the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner’s office to resolve the unfolding situation and secure the release of the teachers. Senior officials\u2014including the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner, the Administrator of the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), and representatives from the district and metropolitan police\u2014attended the meeting. A 10-member delegation of protesting students from Sylhet Engineering College also participated.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, a request was made to end the blockade that had kept the teachers confined for two days. However, no final agreement or resolution regarding the withdrawal of the blockade was reached, as no clear decision had yet been received from the ministry.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the media about the matter, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury said, “It was agreed at the meeting in the Deputy Commissioner’s office that the decisions reached would be conveyed to the students at the college. After the decisions were communicated to them, they rejected them. The protesting students are now stating that they will neither allow the outgoing principal to leave nor permit the new principal to enter. Consequently, no resolution was achieved.”<\/p>\n
