State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has directed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to investigate whether artificial shortages are being created to sell LPG at inflated prices, despite there being no actual supply deficit in the country. He also instructed them to identify the causes and submit reports\u2014backed by evidence\u2014if shortages arise anywhere despite normal supply levels.<\/p>\n
The Minister issued these directives during a virtual meeting with the Deputy Commissioners at the Secretariat on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Minister stated that there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country. Yet, reports of shortages in various areas and complaints regarding sales at prices exceeding the fixed rates have surfaced. The DCs have been instructed to gather information and submit reports detailing where and why supplies are low, where excessive prices are being charged, and whether artificial shortages are being engineered.<\/p>\n
The Minister noted that once the information from the DCs is received, necessary measures will be taken following discussions with importers and relevant stakeholders. Initiatives will be undertaken to boost supplies in areas where deficits are identified.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that raising LPG prices by creating artificial shortages would not be tolerated. Action will also be taken against anyone selling LPG above the rates fixed by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).<\/p>\n
The Energy Minister directed the Deputy Commissioners to remain vigilant and alert to ensure the LPG supply situation remains stable.<\/p>\n
Recently, the rise in international LPG prices has impacted the domestic market. Although importers claim there is no major supply crisis, complaints have arisen regarding LPG being sold at inflated prices in retail markets across the country. In some places, reports indicate that the price of a 12kg cylinder has exceeded Tk 2,000. Against this backdrop, the government has initiated an investigation to pinpoint exactly where the supply chain is faltering.<\/p>\n
