Dinesh Trivedi, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, remarked that there was no alternative to granting permission for former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to land in Delhi. He stated, “Sheikh Hasina was still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh when she traveled to India. India had little choice but to grant her refuge.”<\/p>\n
He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon during a Q&A session at a working session of the ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation-2026’ held at a hotel in the capital. The research organization Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) organized this three-day international conference.<\/p>\n
Dinesh Trivedi said, “One must first understand the context of Sheikh Hasina’s journey to India. Neither the Indian Air Force nor the Indian Army brought her to India; the situation arose due to the unfortunate circumstances prevailing in Bangladesh at the time. Such events\u2014where innocent lives were lost\u2014should not have occurred. She was brought to India on a Bangladeshi military aircraft.”<\/p>\n
He added, “The military aircraft arrived in India at a time when we were not prepared; I was watching television and saw news scrolls indicating she might be heading elsewhere. Yet, throughout this period, Sheikh Hasina remained the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. We had no other option. As a neighbor, it was our responsibility to accept the reality.”<\/p>\n
The Indian High Commissioner stated, “Often, situations arise for which one is unprepared. What other choice did we have? Had we refused to accept her or denied landing permission, I do not know what the consequences might have been. That is the historical context.”<\/p>\n
When asked about relations between the two countries, the High Commissioner said that Bangladesh is an independent nation and will make its own decisions independently; determining which countries to engage with or maintain relations with is entirely a matter for the people and government of Bangladesh. A true neighbor does not interfere in internal policies.<\/p>\n
