Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, stated that peace—not the nuclear bomb—is the most powerful weapon in the world. He emphasized that sustainable global peace can be established through the power of art, culture, and humanity, rather than through war and destruction.

He made these remarks yesterday while addressing a program organized to mark ‘World Peace Day-2026’ at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segunbagicha area.

Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan said, “As you know, I am a student of nuclear physics. I have studied how nuclear bombs are made. Historically, the nuclear bomb is considered the most powerful weapon on earth. Yet, despite being a student of that subject, I believe that peace is the world’s most powerful weapon.”

Highlighting the relationship between art, culture, and peace, he said, “Culture, heritage, music, painting, and dance have been vehicles for peace throughout the history of human civilization. Art recognizes no geographical boundaries. When we speak Bangla and visit England, many people there cannot understand our language; we have to speak English to make ourselves understood. However, there are no such linguistic barriers when it comes to music, painting, or dance.”

He added, “If an artist from Bangladesh performs at an art gallery in London, the audience does not need to learn Bangla to enjoy it. The power of art transcends geographical boundaries to reach people; it erases those boundaries and spreads across the globe.”

Describing art and culture as potent vehicles for global peace, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan noted, “That is why there is a profound connection between World Peace Day and the arts.”

The Local Government Minister also touched upon his own involvement in infrastructure development, mentioning that Selima Rahman was in charge of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs during Khaleda Zia’s tenure as Prime Minister. About 30 to 35 years ago, while in charge of the Ministry of Planning, he had the authority to provide direct grants of up to 10 crore Taka for development projects.

Highlighting the history of the International Day of Peace, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan said, “The initiative to observe the International Day of Peace began after a resolution was adopted by the United Nations in 1981. Later, September 21 was designated as the International Day of Peace. The practice of the arts fosters communication and mutual understanding among people; therefore, art and culture play a vital role in establishing peace.”

Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan added, “Let us today set an example in Bangladesh—with an open and inclusive mindset—demonstrating that through peace, we can build a balanced and beautiful society across the globe.”

The event featured various cultural performances, including music and dance, presented by the artists and performers of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
