Akhtaruzzaman. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir issued this order yesterday, Saturday, following a hearing.

Earlier that day, at the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court premises in Dhaka, SI Morshed Alam—the officer in charge of the CMM court—attempted to put handcuffs and a helmet on him before he stepped out of the prison van.

At that moment, Akhtaruzzaman said, “Don’t hold my hand; don’t touch me.” He was subsequently handcuffed and made to wear the helmet. However, upon reaching the gate of the prison van, he expressed his anger by tossing the helmet aside. He asked, “Why should I wear a helmet? I am not with the Awami League.”

Seeing journalists, he remarked, “I threw away the helmet. I do not accept the government’s illegal orders.” He then chanted the slogan “Inqilab Zindabad” (Long live the revolution) before being taken into the courtroom.

Before the hearing, addressing journalists regarding the allegations against him, Akhtaruzzaman said, “I spoke out against the mismanagement at Biman [Bangladesh Airlines]. We cannot be silenced through oppression and persecution.” The court subsequently ordered a one-day remand following the hearing.

Regarding the hearing, Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruk Faruki stated that upon arriving at the court, Akhtaruzzaman became agitated with the police and demanded that everyone—including the police—be removed from the courtroom. He did not want the police or journalists present and made hostile, aggressive remarks directed at both the court and the prosecution.

The PP added that during the hearing, Akhtaruzzaman belittled the judge, claiming the judge lacked the authority to deliver a verdict.

The PP further noted that Akhtaruzzaman claimed in court that he had protested against a specific incident at the airport; the court responded by acknowledging that protesting was his right. However, the language of protest must be restrained, and one must not hurt anyone while protesting.

The Public Prosecutor (PP) stated that in response to the court’s remarks, Akhtaruzzaman made even more aggressive statements; the court had asked him to calm down, yet he repeatedly insisted that he would continue to act the same way and dared anyone to try and stop him.

Earlier, around 5 PM on Friday, Akhtaruzzaman was arrested at his residence in the capital’s Cantonment area. Police arrested him in connection with a case filed over an incident involving chaos caused by a shortage of luggage and trolleys at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, obstruction of official duties, and the physical assault of an on-duty security officer.

The case was filed by Md. Shahriar Alam Sajib, a security officer at the airport.

According to the case statement, there was a heavy influx of passengers from flight BG-338, arriving from Medina, at 10:40 AM on Thursday. This led to a shortage of trolleys at the No. 8 luggage belt area, alongside delays in luggage delivery. At that time, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, the airport’s Executive Director, arrived at the scene following a call from Mohammad Kamal Hossain, the Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-5 constituency. He (Ragib Samad) attempted to calm the situation.

Amidst this, Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman advanced towards the Executive Director in an aggressive manner. He hurled verbal abuse and threats at him and made indecent remarks regarding the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The case statement further notes that the situation escalated when protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman began recording videos on their mobile phones within the airport’s restricted (KPI) area. The on-duty security supervisor, Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, forbade them from recording.

Enraged by this, Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused the security officer and, at one point, physically assaulted him. Additionally, he caused damage by throwing bottles of Zamzam water—collected by ordinary passengers—off a trolley and behaved aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Such actions obstruct government officials from performing their duties at protected and sensitive facilities. At the same time, they create a risk of disrupting the airport’s normal order and security.

Akhtaruzzaman was elected Member of Parliament twice consecutively—in 1991 and 1996—representing the Kishoreganj-2 constituency on a BNP ticket. In the controversial 11th parliamentary election, he contested under the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ (Dhaner Sheesh) symbol but lost to the ‘Boat’ (Nauka) candidate. Subsequently, he ran as an independent candidate in the 2024 election and was defeated.

He once served as the president of the Kishoreganj district unit of the BNP. On February 20, 2022, he was expelled from the party for the fifth time on charges of engaging in activities contrary to party discipline. He joined Jamaat-e-Islami prior to the 13th national parliamentary election.

Meanwhile, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has temporarily suspended two officials following an incident involving a delay in providing Zamzam water to Umrah pilgrims. The suspended officials are Baggage In-charge Monirul Islam Prodhan and Flight Supervisor Saddam Hossain. They have been asked to provide an explanation regarding the allegations of negligence in their duties.

Share your opinion.

Court Correspondent // The court has granted a one-day remand for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (Retd.)
