UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said those polluting the environment have a clear responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. Otherwise there will be a risk of disaster around the world.

Guterres spoke to the BBC on the sidelines of the 53rd Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga. He said, “The Pacific region is the most dangerous area in the world today. A great injustice has been done around this region. That’s why I came here today.’

The United Nations has released two separate reports on rising sea levels due to global warming. The report highlights how this rise in height has threatened the island nations of the Pacific region. “Swelling seas are coming at us all,” Guterres said while addressing the forum.

Regarding the cause of the rise in sea level, the UN Secretary General said, ‘The cause is clear – greenhouse gases. A large amount of this gas is emitted due to burning of fossil fuels. It is burning our planet. This warming is affecting the sea.

The United Nations Climate Action Team released a report on sea level rise. It is said that the average height of the sea level in the world has been increasing unprecedentedly in the last three thousand years. In the last 30 years, the average height has increased by 9.4 cm. There, in the tropical Pacific, this increase is 15 cm.

Guterres participated in the Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting for the second time. Leaders of 18 countries including Australia, New Zealand participated in this event held every year. Earlier, the UN Secretary General visited Truvalu in 2019. Sebar also expressed concern about rising sea levels.
