Donald Trump has described the US military’s sixth-generation stealth fighter jet, the F-47, as the most devastating fighter jet ever built. He made the remarks while addressing the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday. At the same time, he questioned why the aircraft was named ’47’.
Trump said, ‘They named it 47. If I don’t like it, I’ll take the number 47 off. I wonder why they named it 47? But if I don’t like it, I’ll take the 47 off.’
About the F-47 fighter jet
* The F-47 uses advanced stealth technology, which reduces the likelihood of being detected by radar.
It has an integrated sensor system, which makes the pilot more effective in identifying and attacking targets.
The aircraft has a canard design near the cockpit, which increases stability and allows for precise turning and tactical maneuvers.
It is designed for long-range combat and can use advanced missiles to strike targets from a distance. It is also capable of close dogfights.
The F-47 can operate in conjunction with autonomous drones, known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft.
The aircraft’s design incorporates elements from Boeing’s YF-118G Bird of Prey, such as angled wings for stability and a curved nose for improved aerodynamics.
Compared to previous generations of fighter jets, the F-47 has a longer range, can be deployed quickly, and is more adaptable to different combat situations.
US Air Force plans for the F-47
In March 2025, the US Air Force announced that it had awarded Boeing the contract to build the F-47. They see the aircraft as crucial to maintaining air dominance in future conflicts, especially in the face of a potential high-stakes confrontation with China in the Pacific.
The Air Force has said it plans to acquire at least 185 F-47s and expects the first aircraft to be operational by the end of the decade.
Trump’s March 2025 remarks
On March 21, 2025, Trump announced from the Oval Office that he had ordered the Air Force to build “the world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet,” according to a Bloomberg report.
He touted the aircraft’s speed, maneuverability and weapons-carrying capabilities, saying, “It’s something that no one has ever seen before.”
Regarding the name, he said, “There’s nothing else in the world that comes close. It’s going to be called the F-47. The generals chose that name. It’s a beautiful number.”
Why the name F-47?
A report by The War Zone says that the US Air Force has given an explanation behind the name F-47.
This is a reference to the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter jet of World War II, which was used by many countries, including the US, for many years. Later, after dropping the word “P” (Pursuit), it was named F-47.
The number ‘47’ also refers to the year 1947, the year in which the US Air Force separated from the Army and emerged as an independent force.
The name F-47 is also related to Donald Trump, as he is the 45th and currently 47th President of the United States.
