Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that he supports a return to the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the US and Iran in June. This was reported by China’s state news agency, Xinhua. According to the report, Xi made these remarks during a meeting held at the White House on Thursday morning (local time).

The June MOU had outlined provisions for halting hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade, alongside initiating talks aimed at achieving long-term peace. However, the agreement collapsed after fighting resumed.

Since then, the talks have remained at a standstill. Nevertheless, Beijing—Tehran’s top trading partner—has long been viewed as a potential mediator in these negotiations.

Call to Reject Taiwan Independence
Separately, Xinhua reported that Xi told Trump, “China’s position regarding territorial integrity is absolutely clear.”

The agency further stated that Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged Trump to oppose Taiwan’s independence and to handle the matter prudently.

US foreign policy has long sought to balance support for the self-governing island (Taiwan) with maintaining relations with Beijing. Conversely, Beijing has consistently claimed Taiwan as an integral part of its territory.
