The relatives submitted a memorandum to the Chief Justice seeking the return alive of the missing and abducted victims containing a list of 64 persons and seeking justice against torture. Later, the list of 64 missing persons has been sent to the commission of inquiry formed for the purpose of “finding the forcibly disappeared persons” for taking necessary action on the instructions of the Chief Justice.
Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmad Bhuya sent the list to the commission on Thursday (September 12) on the instructions of Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed. Public relations officer of the Supreme Court’s appeal department sent to the media. This was informed in Shafiqul Islam’s press release.
The press release said that the relatives of the persons forcibly disappeared by the law enforcement agencies at various times came to the Chief Justice on August 28 to submit a memorandum under the banner of ‘Missing Family Members’. The Registrar General of the Supreme Court accepted that memorandum. In that memorandum, details of the financial and emotional plight of the relatives of the missing persons and their family members, as well as the prosecution of the perpetrators of the crime of disappearance at the International Criminal Tribunal, orders for financial compensation to the families of the missing persons, provision of opportunity to conduct the case at public expense and if the missing person is not found The cooperation of the Chief Justice is sought in eight matters including issuance of special certificate for sale or transfer of property of the concerned person.
In this memorandum signed by Alhaj Md. Bellal Hossain, the chief coordinator of the family members of the missing persons, a list containing the pictures and names, addresses of a total of 64 persons who have gone missing at different times is given. That list has been sent to the commission of inquiry in this regard.
On August 27, the government set up a commission of inquiry to trace the enforced disappearances by law enforcement agencies and members of various agencies. The other members of this commission formed under the leadership of the retired High Court judge Moinul Islam Chowdhury are the retired additional judges of the High Court division. Farid Ahmed Shibli, human rights activist Noor Khan, BRAC University teacher Nabila Idris and human rights activist Sajjad Hossain.
