The police have arrested Shahriar Kabir, chairman of the advisory board of the 1971 Khatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee and former railway minister Nurul Islam. Shahriar Kabir was arrested by the police from Banani’s house in the capital at around 12 o’clock on Monday night. Inspector (Investigation) of Tejgaon Police Station Sohel Rana confirmed this information to the media.
Related sources say that Shahriar Kabir’s name is on the list of accused in multiple murder cases filed in some police stations of the capital including Jatrabari. He will be produced in court on Tuesday.
Besides, Hefazet Islam Joint Secretary General (Education and Law) Mufti Harun Izahar Chowdhury accused former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others of crimes against humanity and genocide surrounding the meeting of Hefazete Islam on May 5, 2013 at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel at the International Criminal Tribunal on August 20. Shahriar Kabir’s name is also in that list.
Earlier, the police arrested former railway minister Nurul Islam (Sujan) in a murder case filed at Jatrabari police station around 10 pm on Monday. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Wari Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Saleh Uddin said that Jatrabari police station has a murder case against former minister Nurul Islam Sujan. He has been arrested in that case.
Nurul Islam participated in the Eighth National Assembly Elections in 2001 as an Awami League candidate and was defeated from Panchagarh-2 seat. In 2008, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time in the 9th National Parliament Election. Nurul Islam took oath as Railway Minister on January 7, 2019 after being elected as a Member of Parliament for three consecutive times.
Sheikh Hasina left the country by resigning from the post of Prime Minister on August 5 in the face of student uprising. Since then, 31 people including ministers, members of parliament, advisers and top leaders of the Awami League government have been arrested. Among them are Law Minister Anisul Haque, former prime minister’s private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman and adviser on energy, mineral resources and power Taufiq-e-Ilahi Chowdhury. The arrested persons are in police custody and in jail for questioning.
