Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has commented that the ice of relations with India has started to melt. He made these comments in an interview given to Indian news agency ANI after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Prannoy Verma. Mirza Fakhrul also said that there were questions about our (Bangladesh and India) relations since the last election in Bangladesh.
Besides, BNP has also assured India that Indian separatists will not be able to use the territory of Bangladesh. News agency ANI reported this information in a report on Wednesday (September 25).
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal (BNP), one of Bangladesh’s largest political parties, believes relations with India have “started to thaw” after a student-led popular uprising ousted Sheikh Hasina as prime minister and took over a caretaker government, the report said. However, the BNP led by Begum Khaleda Zia has earlier criticized several initiatives and agreements concluded with India during the last 15 years during Hasina’s tenure.
ANI reports that the recently appointed Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Prannoy Verma met with the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the BNP office to discuss strengthening ties.
While talking to ANI, Mirza Fakhrul said that this meeting with Prannoy Verma has taken both the countries in a positive direction. Mirza Fakhrul said, “Since the last election in Bangladesh, there have been questions about our relationship. But this time the situation has certainly improved with the arrival of the High Commissioner (of India) in our office. The ice has started to melt.”
The BNP boycotted the Bangladesh National Assembly elections held in January 2024. He said, “India and Bangladesh have always had very good relations and relations have improved. Of course, this is also a turning point in India-Bangladesh relations.”
The BNP Secretary General said that his party has assured India that if it comes to power, they will not allow separatist organizations to use the territory of Bangladesh. However, there have been reports in the past of separatist organizations in India’s northeastern region harboring them in Bangladesh.
“We discussed normal relations between the two countries,” Mirza Fakhrul told ANI about the meeting with Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma. We mentioned water sharing issues, border killings, existing trade imbalances. At the same time, India’s main issue was the security problem. We have assured, if we are in power, we will ensure that this territory will not be used by separatists.”
