Former Chief Secretary of Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad arrested

Former Member of Parliament and former Chief Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad has been arrested. Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police arrested him from Dhanmondi in the capital on Saturday evening.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Detective) Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed this information. He said that Abul Kalam Azad was arrested from Dhanmondi on the basis of a specific complaint. He will be produced in court tomorrow.

Abul Kalam Azad became the Member of Parliament for Jamalpur-5 (Sadar) constituency on the nomination of Awami League in the last parliamentary elections.

The Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina collapsed on August 5 in a student uprising. On August 15, the first case against Sheikh Hasina was filed in Dhaka court. Since then, at least 222 cases have been reported against him. Out of these, 190 cases have been charged with murder. In most of the cases, apart from Sheikh Hasina, former ministers of her government, leaders of Awami League, former IGP of police, former commissioner of DMP, various ranks of police officers and some former government officials are accused.

So far, 45 leading people from various professions including former Law Minister Anisul Haque, former Prime Minister’s private industry and investment advisor Salman F Rahman, some ministers, members of parliament, journalists have been arrested in various murder cases.
