BNP Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman commented that democracy does not mean only elections, democracy means ensuring people’s freedom and basic rights, so fair elections must be held to maintain the trend of democracy. He made this comment in a message sent to the media on the occasion of Martyr Jihad Day on Thursday (October 10). Tariq Rahman said, I pay deep respect to the memory of Shaheed Nazir Uddin Jehad, a fearless soldier of the anti-dictatorship movement. May his soul rest in peace.
Tariq Rahman Shaheed Nazir Uddin Jehad mentioned an unforgettable name in the anti-dictatorship Ershad movement of the 90s and said that the bloody movement was for re-establishment of multi-party democracy, expression of opinion and freedom of the press. Martyr Jehad took the bullet of the police on his chest while playing a leading role in the anti-dictatorship mass movement of the 90s. This fearless student leader accepted martyrdom. His blood flow was followed by the popular uprising that year, the fall of the dictator Ershad.
He said, democracy was killed by dictator Ershad. Jihad dedicated his life with the conviction to restore democracy and put it on a firm footing. His soul will suffer if we cannot fulfill his dream.
Tariq Rahman also said that the essential condition for free and fair elections is a non-partisan neutral government during the elections. Democracy means not only elections, democracy means guaranteeing people’s freedom and fundamental rights. Therefore, we have to resist the plot of domestic and foreign evil forces, protect freedom-sovereignty and restore democracy by keeping the motivation of martyr Jehad in our heart.
