Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese human rights organization, has received the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. The organization received this award for its role in reducing the use of nuclear weapons. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the name of the winning institution on Friday (October 11) at 3 pm Bangladesh time.

Known as hibakusha, this organization is a Japanese organization representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Nobel committee chairman Berit Reiss-Andersen praised Nihon Hidankyo’s extraordinary efforts to build a world against nuclear weapons during the announcement.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute registered a total of 286 individuals and organizations for the Nobel Peace Prize this time. Among them 197 persons. And 89 institutions.

Iran’s imprisoned human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize last year. She was awarded this honor in recognition of her fight against oppression of women in the country.

As a tradition, the names of the winners of the world’s most prestigious award start on the first Monday of October every year. Accordingly, last Monday (October 7), Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday announced the names of Nobel laureates in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Literature respectively. And on October 14, the sixth and final award for the economy category will be announced.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the prize annually since 1901. The award is given in the name and legacy of Swedish scientist and inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, 5 years after his death. Later in 1969 economics was added to it.

The prize money is handed over to the winners every year on December 10, the day of Alfred Nobel’s death. Award winners in each case receive a gold medal, a certificate and 1.1 million Swedish krona (about 1.28 million taka in Bangladeshi currency).
