The interim government has set the maximum age limit for entering government jobs at 32 years. This decision was taken in the advisory council meeting of the interim government on Thursday as per the recommendation of the committee formed in view of the long-standing demands of the job aspirants. Earlier, however, the committee headed by former secretary Abdul Mueed Chowdhury had recommended fixing the age of 35 years for boys and 37 years for girls.
According to the history book of Bangladesh Civil Service written by AKM Abdul Awal Majumder, former rector and former secretary of Bangladesh Public Administration Training Institute, the maximum age for ICS examination in late British India was 23 years. This age limit was fixed at 24 years till 1962 during Pakistan period. Later from 1963 to 1971 the age limit was 25 years.
After independence in Bangladesh in 1972, the maximum age limit for entry into government service was set at 27 years. In a notification issued by the then Establishment Ministry on 31 June 1991, the age limit was fixed at 30 years.
The demand to increase the age limit to 35 years has been raised for many years. The Awami government, which fell in the student uprising, did not fulfill the demand. However, a temporary exemption was given due to the situation of corona infection. For example, in a notification in September 2022, the government relaxed the maximum age limit of 39 months for all government jobs (except BCS).
