A Supreme Court lawyer has sent a legal notice to the government seeking cancellation of all power deals with India’s Adani Group. Barrister M Qayyum sent the legal notice by registered post on Wednesday (November 6).
The notice seeks immediate reconsideration of the unfair unilateral agreement or its cancellation in its entirety. The lawyer concerned also said that he will file a writ in the High Court if the process of reviewing the agreement is not initiated within three days.
A review committee consisting of energy and legal experts has also been called upon to submit a detailed report. The PDB chairman and the secretary of the Ministry of Energy have been given three days to respond to the legal notice.
In 2017, a power purchase agreement was hastily signed with Adani under the direction of the Power Department. At that time, no imported coal-fired power plant was operational in the country. One of these agreements is a 25-year power purchase agreement signed with Adani in 2017. Bangladesh is mainly supplied with electricity from Adani’s 1,600 MW power plant in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. The National Review Committee meeting on September 28 decided to collect relevant information and data from 11 power plants.
The Power Department has been instructed to provide these information and documents to the committee. These include Adani’s power plants in India.
