The chief advisor to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, said, “We are an interim government, not a permanent government. The regular government’s term is 5 years. However, the term of the government in the new constitution can be 4 years. Because, the people want a shorter term of the government.

Al-Jazeera recently conducted an interview in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The interview was broadcast on Sunday (November 17).

The chief advisor said, “The term of the interim government will definitely be less than four years. It can even be shorter. That mainly depends on the will of the people and political parties. Our goal is to complete the work of the interim government as soon as possible. If the political parties want, we are ready to hold early elections without the reform process. However, the reform work is also going on at the same pace. The entire government system is being reformed, even the constitution is on the verge of changing.”

He said that the common people in Bangladesh want something new and that is why reforms are being brought in the entire government system. Various reform commissions are being formed for this purpose.

Dr. Yunus said, we are asking the people – do you want to go to the polls now or do you want to complete the reforms? Everything is being done based on the opinions of the people and political parties.

Yunus said in his interview, ‘As we move forward, we have to complete a lot of work. The train will reach its final station depending on how quickly we can establish the railway line and this will happen through consensus among the political parties.’

He said, ‘Bangladesh has sunk into the depths of corruption. Because, the system that we had for the last 15 years – mismanagement, misrule, destruction of our institutions. The system will be restructured sector by sector. A big task.’

Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, ‘About 1,500 people were killed in the few weeks of protests that brought down Hasina’s government. About 3,500 people were kidnapped during her 15-year rule. “We will demand the return of the fallen dictator Sheikh Hasina from India. I have already discussed the matter with the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan.”
