Police have arrested three more people in connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam and the attack on law enforcement officers in Chittagong. They are Babla Dhar, Sajal Shil and Durlav Das. They were arrested from the Kotwali area of the city on Thursday night.

Police say that among the three arrested, Durlav Das was in possession of a sharp weapon during the murder of the lawyer. He was identified after watching the video footage.

Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Fazlul Quader Chowdhury told the media on Friday afternoon that three people have been arrested in connection with the attack on law enforcement officers. One of them participated in the murder. He was in possession of a sharp weapon during the incident. The three arrested have been sent to jail through the court in a case of attack on law enforcement officers. With this, the number of arrested accused has reached 38. Nine of them were involved in the murder.

The OC also said that his family has not yet filed a case with the police station in the case of the lawyer’s murder. However, they are expected to file a case.

Police said that 25 to 30 people took part in the murder of the lawyer. Four people took part in the beating. After watching the video footage of the scene, the police have already arrested nine people. A drive is underway to arrest the rest.

Last Tuesday, at around 12:30 noon, the bail of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson of the Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, who was arrested in a sedition case, was rejected by the Chittagong court. Then, when he was being taken to a prison van to be sent to jail, his followers blocked the prison van and started a protest.

Later, the police and BGB dispersed the protesters by beating them with batons and throwing sound grenades. That’s when the clash started. At that time, some lawyers took out a procession protesting the vandalism of lawyers’ cars and the pelting of bricks. Several eyewitnesses said that Saiful fell on the road after stumbling on his way back after the procession. He was then hacked and beaten to death.
Based on a 52-second video footage collected by the police from the scene, the investigation officials said that Om Das, Chandan and Ranab beat lawyer Saiful with sharp weapons. Even though his body was lying motionless, others continued to beat him severely with sticks. There were 25-30 other people there. Most of them were cleaners. One of them is a law student at a private university.
