In the fifteen consecutive years of the previous Awami League government from 2009 to April 2024, bribes worth Tk 146,252 crore were transacted in the country’s service sector. In addition, in the service sector, 70.9 percent of households were victims of corruption in 2023. The three most corrupt sectors are passports, BRTA and law enforcement agencies. In addition, the overall rate of households that were victims of bribes in the same year was 50.8 percent. In 2023, households were forced to pay Tk 5,680 in bribes, i.e., irregular money. The average bribe amount was highest in the judicial services, land services and banking sectors.
Such information has emerged in the report titled ‘National Household Survey on Corruption in the Service Sector 2003’ published by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday. The results of the survey were released through a press conference at the Midas Center in Dhanmondi in the capital. Nine recommendations were presented by TIB at the press conference.
Releasing the results of the survey, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, “TIB’s 10 surveys have revealed the extent of bribery transactions in the country’s service sector from 2009 to April 2024.”
