On the occasion of the great Victory Day, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has sent a message to the media. This information was given in a press release signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Tarique Rahman’s message is reproduced in full—

‘On the occasion of the great Victory Day, I extend my greetings to the countrymen and the Bangladeshis living abroad. May their lives be filled with happiness, peace, prosperity and welfare. On this day, I deeply remember those fearless martyrs, whose sacrifices earned us our independent homeland. I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs of the liberation war. I pay my respectful respects to the mothers and sisters who made the utmost sacrifices to achieve the country’s victory from the hands of subjugation.

The war of independence, which began on March 26, 1971, at the call of President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of independence, was won on December 16 of that year by defeating the Pakistani occupying forces. The indomitable heroic freedom fighters of the country risked their lives to win this victory. Therefore, December 16 is our proud and glorious Victory Day. On this great day, I respectfully salute those heroic soldiers.

The people of this country jumped into the war of independence in 1971 with the determination to establish a democratic Bangladesh free from exploitation and deprivation. After independence, the destructive fascist groups at various times stopped the progress of our democracy and took away the basic and human rights of the people. But every time, the democracy-loving people of this country united and restored democracy and basic rights through intense movements.

Although our beloved motherland was free from enemies in 1971, the blueprint of the conspirators still exists. The hegemonic forces continue to plot to destroy our independence and sovereignty. The domestic allies of that evil force are creating various conspiracies and endangering the freedom we have earned at the cost of many sacrifices. They have been humiliating public opinion by holding one-sided elections of farce for 16 years. The civil liberties of the people of this country have been made invisible and people have been deprived of their rights. Multi-party democracy has been discredited in this country. In a country without democracy, the darkness of despair, fear and anarchy descends everywhere under the sway of absolute power. The power grabbers have launched brutal attacks on the people, making countless people invisible and killing them, and the situation has become terribly anarchic. The undisputed leader, who has been fighting for democracy for a long time, was unjustly imprisoned and kept in a dark prison. That evil force has relied on bloodshed to implement its blueprint. To protect the independence and sovereignty of our beloved motherland from them and to free democracy from danger, our national unity was strengthened by the inspiration of the great Victory Day and Awami fascism was defeated in the earth-shaking movement of the students and the people in July-August 2017. The hope of protecting independence and sovereignty and reviving a strong democracy has once again arisen in the country. On the great Victory Day, I appeal to all the countrymen. On the occasion of Victory Day, I wish the success of all the programs.
