Questioning what the interim government wants to do, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said that the people have the right to know how much time is needed to repair (reform) the state and society. If the government announces the roadmap for the future, it will ensure transparency and accountability to the people. It will increase the dynamism in administrative activities.
He also said that if the advisors show discomfort on their faces when they hear about the roadmap for the future of the interim government, it will be against the people’s wishes. The more transparent the government is to the people through its activities, the people will extend their support to them.
He said these things at a Victory Day discussion at the Engineers Institution Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (December 15) afternoon.
At the same time, he also mentioned that the beloved Bangladesh will soon start its journey on the electoral roadmap after overcoming all the ambiguities. Addressing the party leaders and activists, the acting chairman of BNP said, “Your companions on this journey are the democracy-loving people of this country. So, stay with the people and try your best to keep the people with you.”
Tarique Rahman spoke virtually at the discussion meeting chaired by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Senior party leaders were also present at the time.
Tarique Rahman said in his speech, “On the 54th anniversary of this glorious victory achieved at the cost of millions of lives, I extend my heartfelt greetings to the freedom-loving people. Deep respect to the heroic freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for independence. The heroic freedom fighters liberated Bangladesh in 1971 with the aim of establishing equality, human dignity and values. However, the evil forces of subservience were repeatedly falling into the trap of conspiring to put this country in danger; especially the fugitive dictatorship wanted to sell the endangered glory of Bangladesh.” For a decade and a half, Bangladesh had sold out the glory and honor of its independence. The people’s freedom was saved by the government of the Tabedar mafia group fleeing on August 5 in the face of the student-public movement.
He said, “Protecting the people’s freedom, this year’s Victory Day in a fascism-free Bangladesh is very glorious, very meaningful and significant. I believe that in the future, Independence Day will not be limited to just celebrations, it cannot be kept. It will be a day of responsibility to the people.”
Tarique Rahman further said, “The people have seen how the people’s rights were taken away, the right to vote was taken away. The election of people’s representatives was completely destroyed.”
Referring to the people as the center of democracy, the BNP leader said, “If we want to strengthen the state and the people, the center of democracy is the people. If the government is formed by people’s representatives elected directly by the people, and accountability is effective, the people’s rights are guaranteed.”
Citing the topic of reforms, Tarique Rahman further said, “What does the current interim government want to do? The people have the right to know how much time is needed to repair the state and society.” If the government announces the roadmap for the future, it will ensure transparency and accountability to the people. On the one hand, it will increase the dynamism in administrative activities. If the advisors show discomfort on their faces when they hear about the roadmap for the future of the interim government, it will be against the people’s wishes. The more transparent the government is to the people through its activities, the people will extend their support to them.
Regarding deaths from dengue, Tarique Rahman said, people continue to die from dengue almost every day in some hospital in this country. It is becoming difficult to meet the medical expenses in the hospital. The people have to fight to meet their daily expenses due to the unbridled rise in the prices of daily necessities. If the interim government shortens the time in the name of reforms without controlling the daily suffering in public life or the market situation, then the question of whether reforms come first or family comes first may become the main one for the people. Despite accepting the suffering, the people are still not speaking out against the government. The people want to see the interim government successful. Whether the interim government wants to see them successful themselves, they will have to prove it through their activities.
Tarique Rahman also said, a unity has been achieved through the blood of millions of people. We have to build a Bangladesh without discrimination. BNP has announced a 31-point program to build a Bangladesh without discrimination, a humane Bangladesh. Every citizen has to take responsibility for fulfilling the goals of this program.
BNP Standing Committee members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman and others also spoke at the discussion meeting.
