BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on the countrymen to work together to ensure freedom, sovereignty and democracy.

He said, “The significance of the 1969 mass uprising in our national life is immense. Therefore, on this great day today, I call on the countrymen to work together to ensure freedom, sovereignty, democracy and the fundamental and human rights of the people.”

He made this call in a message on Thursday on the occasion of the historic Mass Uprising Day.

The BNP Acting Chairman said, “January 24 is an unforgettable day in our national history. After a long movement and struggle, on this day in 1969, the students and the public built a strong resistance against the then Pakistani colonial rule. The mass movement intensified and turned into a mass uprising. The fall of the military dictator was confirmed.

He said, “This paved the way for our independence. The main goal of the mass uprising was to return from dictatorship to democracy, multi-party political activities, practice of pluralism and thought, and regain the civil liberties of the people.”

In another message, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The historic Mass Uprising Day is an important day in our national life. On this day in 1969, the strong unity of the students and the public transformed the long movement into a mass uprising. The door to democracy and freedom was opened with the fall of the dictatorship. The Mass Uprising Day is our source of inspiration to protect the country’s democracy and the fundamental rights of citizens.”

Mirza Fakhrul said, “This day sharpens our spirit of achieving democracy and freedom and inspires us to protest against all injustice and oppression.”
