The High Court has issued a verdict to quash the sedition case filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and Ekushey Television chairman Abdus Salam, 4 others.

A High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued the verdict on Tuesday (February 4).

Earlier, on October 31, the High Court quashed the proceedings of the sedition case filed against Tarique Rahman and Abdus Salam, 4 others and acquitted them. The other two are former chief reporter of Ekushey Television Mahathir Farooqui Khan and senior reporter Kanak Sarwar.

The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the verdict.

Senior lawyers Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Advocate Zakir Hossain, Advocate Maqsud Ullah, Advocate Shamsul Islam Mukul, Advocate Ajmal Hossain Khokon, and others were present in the court on that day.

The court framed charges in this case in 2017. On January 5, 2015, when Ekushey TV broadcasted Tarique Rahman’s speech from London live, the next day, Tejgaon Police Station sought permission from the Home Ministry to file a sedition case against Tarique Rahman and Abdus Salam. After receiving permission from the Home Ministry, Tejgaon Police Station SI Borhan Uddin filed the case with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station on January 8, 2015. After the investigation, Detective Inspector Emdadul Haque of the police filed a chargesheet in the court on September 6 last year. Along with Tarique Rahman and Abdus Salam, Mahathir Farooqui Khan and Kanak Sarwar were also accused there.

The complaint states that by broadcasting Tarique Rahman’s speech live from London, the accused conspired to spread false and fabricated information, threatening the country’s sovereignty and creating hatred for the established government.
