Government preparing to hold elections by December: Mirza Fakhrul

Dhaka //

The interim government is preparing to hold elections by December this year, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP Secretary General told the media after a meeting with the chief advisor at his residence in Jamuna on Monday.

Mirza Fakhrul said, the chief advisor and those with him have assured us that they are making arrangements for the elections very quickly. He (the chief advisor) also said that he is working to arrange elections by December. We hope that he will announce a roadmap that meets the expectations of the people. Through that, we expect the elections to be completed by December.

Earlier, around 6 pm, a three-member BNP delegation met with the chief advisor in Jamuna.

The BNP was represented by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the nearly one-and-a-half-hour meeting.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, “We have raised the concerns in a meeting with the chief advisor. As a larger party, we have fulfilled our responsibility. The government cannot avoid responsibility for the recent incidents. Because the incidents occurred in front of the forces. This has greatly endangered the law and order situation or stability. Due to these processes, fascism has been given a chance to speak.”

Stating that “we have urged the interim government to hold elections quickly,” he said, “We have promised to hold distance elections by making minimum reforms. We have promised to bring those who are allies of fascism in the administration and who have harmed Bangladesh under the law and remove them from their posts. At the same time, we have demanded that those who have looted the country’s economy be brought back to the country and punished.”

He said, for 15 years, cases have been filed against our leaders and activists, we have demanded their withdrawal. They have approved it morally. We said, the main failure of the government is the inability to control the prices of commodities. The government has told us in this regard that they are working on this issue.

Regarding ‘Operation Devil Hunt’, he said, we have told the head of the government that such operations have happened before. However, no innocent person should be affected in any way. No problem should be created in this regard.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, ‘We will not agree to local elections before the national elections in any way. We have said very clearly before, and we are still saying that there will be no elections before the national elections.’

In response to the question of when the roadmap will be announced, he said, they (the government) will give it. They can say something by the 15th.
