The UN Fact Finding Mission has released a report recommending the abolition of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The UN mission works to investigate allegations of various human rights violations, especially human rights violations. Their report highlights various activities and misdeeds of Bangladesh’s law enforcement agencies, in which RAB plays a significant role.

RAB is accused of killing many suspects in “encounters” or “shootings” and inhumanely torturing those arrested. For this reason, international human rights organizations and the UN have long been criticizing RAB’s activities.

Home Affairs Advisor Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, “The government has welcomed the UN recommendation to abolish RAB. However, their proposal will be reviewed and a decision will be taken.

The Home Affairs Advisor told reporters after inaugurating the online app for on-arrival and transit visa applications for foreign nationals on Thursday (February 13) morning.

Following the UN recommendation, the interim government of Bangladesh has responded positively to it and expressed its interest in discussing the abolition or restructuring of RAB. The government has said that it will give importance to implementing any recommendations related to the activities of the law enforcement agencies and will work to keep this matter in line with international human rights standards. This situation may create a new perspective in the discussion on law enforcement agencies and human rights in Bangladesh.
