The Election Commission (EC) will deliver a message at the ongoing District Commissioner (DC) conference to make the country’s history a better one. Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar told reporters at his office in the Election Building on Sunday.
He said, “We have been invited to the DC conference. There is a scheduled session for us on the evening of February 18. We want to hold a better election and we will have to do it at any cost. We will try to give this message to the DCs.”
Anowarul Islam Sarkar said, the EC believes that no bad example will be created in this election, that it will be a better election in the country’s history. Since the job of the Election Commission is to hold elections. And the ‘part and parcel’ of elections is field administration. District Commissioners perform important duties, along with law and order forces. In that case, the current Election Commission is committed to a free, fair, acceptable and transparent election and there is no alternative to this election; we want to hold a better election – we will try to give this message.
Regarding the party mentality of the DCs, the Election Commissioner said, everyone is obliged to help in the election work. When the schedule is made and the EC feels that it is necessary to appoint a neutral DC, the commission will be strict on that matter. Regarding the appointment of its own officials as returning officers, he said, the commission has not yet taken a final decision, but we can pilot it.
In response to another question, he said, the elections that were held under the caretaker government were held by the field administration. So there will be no pressure or influence from the government. So we are optimistic that this time too there will be a fair and beautiful election.
In response to the question whether the Awami League will be able to participate in the next election, the Election Commissioner said, the time has not come for us to say this yet. We will have to wait a little longer. Waiting will take more time. We do not want to say anything about this yet. Time will tell, time will guide us. Time will tell what decision we are taking.
Regarding the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, Anwarul Islam Sarkar said, delimitation is a complex process. If the existing law is amended, the EC will take action in this regard. The Commission is also taking initiatives to amend the law.
