Immortal Ekushey February Today. The great martyr’s day of the blood-soaked language movement and the International Mother Language Day. The brave sons of the Bengali mother stained the streets of Dhaka with their blood on this day in 1952 to protect the honor of the mother language. An unprecedented example of self-sacrifice for the mother language was created in the history of the world. The path of independence was built through the language movement. The only Bengali nation in the world gave their blood to establish the right to language.
On February 21, 1952, people from all walks of life, including students and youth of Bengal (then East Pakistan), spontaneously took to the streets to demand that Bengali be made the state language, ignoring the eye-catching of the ruling class of that time and Section 144 of the administration.
The rapid pace of the movement to establish the mother language alarmed the Pakistani rulers; that day, the police opened fire on the procession of students and the public. Salam, Jabbar, Shafiq, Barkat and Rafiq were shot and martyred. Many others were injured. In exchange for everyone’s blood, Bangla was recognized as the state language of the country. As a continuation of which, Bangladesh’s independence came later.
Meanwhile, a proposal was raised at the UNESCO Paris session held on November 17, 1999, and 188 countries supported it, declaring February 21 as International Mother Language Day. Since February 21, 2000, the day has been celebrated with due dignity in the member countries of the United Nations.
