Chief Justice of Bangladesh Dr. Syed Refat Ahmed has said that Ekushey is a primary pillar of Bengali nationhood. Ekushey is the basic and one of the inspirations for nation-building after 1971. Personally, I have a spiritual connection with Ekushey. My mother is a language soldier, a language daughter.
He said this while laying wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar located on the Dhaka University campus in the first hour of Friday (after 12 midnight). The matter was announced by the Public Relations Officer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Md. Shafiqul Islam through a press release.
The release said that on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Honorable Chief Justice of Bangladesh Dr. Syed Refat Ahmed and the judges of the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic 1952 Language Movement by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar located on the premises of Dhaka University in the first hour (after 12 midnight) today.
After the Honorable President and the Honorable Chief Advisor, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh and the Honorable Judges of the Appellate Division and High Court Division paid their deepest respect to the language martyrs by placing wreaths. After placing the wreaths, they stood in silence for a while to pay their deepest respect to the memory of the language heroes.
At this time, the contribution of the martyrs in the country’s language movement was remembered with respect and the commitment to uphold the glorious tradition of the language movement of the nation was reiterated.
It is worth mentioning that the mother of the Honorable Chief Justice, Sufia Ahmed Bayanno, the first female national professor of Bangladesh, received the Ekushey Padak in 2002 for her contribution to the language movement. In 1952, while still a second-year student of the Department of Islam and Culture at Dhaka University, she played an active role in the language movement and was one of those who defied the government’s ban and violated Section 144 on February 21.
