The Chinese government has warned that the large-scale arms purchase from the United States will not protect Taiwan’s independence forces.
This information was reported in a report in the country’s state-controlled Global Times newspaper on Wednesday.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council in Beijing, said that Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is planning to buy weapons worth 7 to 10 billion dollars from the United States. This is mainly being done to improve relations with the Trump administration.
Zhu also said that Taiwan’s independence forces cannot be protected with ‘security fees’. Chess pieces will eventually become abandoned pieces.
On February 19, Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te said, ‘Taiwan is not a chess piece, but a chess player.’
In this regard, Zhu said that this statement is completely self-deceiving and ridiculous. Now they are spending hundreds of billions of New Taiwan dollars to show their loyalty to the United States. Which is turning Taiwan into a “powder keg.”
The Chinese spokesman also said that such a move would bring suffering to the Taiwanese people. And it is nothing more than a failed attempt by the DPP to rely on foreign powers for Taiwan’s independence.
At the same time, Zhu warned, “Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait cannot go together. Taiwan is China’s Taiwan. If someone wants to separate Taiwan from China, the 1.4 billion Chinese people will never accept it. Even the brave and skilled Chinese People’s Liberation Army will never accept it.”
China essentially considers Taiwan a breakaway province of its own. Although the island has been run practically independently since 1949.
US President Donald Trump recently threatened to impose tariffs on Taiwanese chip imports. Taiwan’s TSMC is the world’s largest chip manufacturer. Which supplies semiconductors to Nvidia, Apple and other US companies.
Last week, Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te announced that Taiwan plans to propose a special defense budget and that he will encourage business people to invest in the United States and engage more with Washington. Source: Anadolu
