In the next election, BNP will form the government and the Jatiya Nagorik Party will remain in the government as the opposition party, said Sarwar Tushar, joint convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP). He said that their party can attract 30-35 percent of the votes in the next election.
He said these things at a roundtable discussion meeting at the BDBL building in Karwan Bazar in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
The results of a survey titled ‘People’s Election Pulse’ were also presented at the discussion meeting. The survey was conducted by a private consulting firm called Innovision. Brain and Voice for Reform collaborated in this work.
At the meeting, Sarwar Tushar, joint convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said that this year’s election is going to be very interesting. He said, ‘Obviously, given the situation now, within a year, I think that BNP will form the government and it would be better for us to be an opposition party. The opposition party actually creates the character of the party. I want to see the party go into the opposition. Let BNP go into the government, we go into the opposition.
Sarwar Tushar wants some members of the Jatiya Nagorik Party to be in parliament, and they will also be a strong opposition party outside. This is his personal desire. Stating that exciting times are coming, Sarwar Tushar said that it should not go to the level of political violence. The competition should be at the level of decent (civility). Sarwar Tushar believes that the Jatiya Nagorik Party can attract 30-35 percent of the votes in the next election. He claims that the Jatiya Nagorik Party will definitely have more votes than the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Commenting on the increasing popularity of Jamaat-e-Islami, Sarwar Tushar said that the situation in the country has historically seen that Jamaat’s popularity is higher in such situations. But whenever the vote comes, it will increase a little more than the votes that Jamaat has. The Jatiya Nagorik Party will get votes from both the BNP and Jamaat parties.
Sarwar Tushar believes that the Awami League votes will go in all three directions this time: the Jatiya Nagorik Party, BNP and Jamaat. He said, “There is a possibility that a large (portion) of those who were young Awami Leaguers, Chhatra Leaguers or were victims of a narrative or did it out of helplessness, will come to this side (National Citizens Party).”
