Army vehicle vandalized in Jaintapur: 5 arrested, 150 accused

Five people have been arrested in Jaintapur, Sylhet, after smugglers pelted stones at an army patrol vehicle on the night of March 26 after seizing buffaloes illegally brought from India at Haripur Bazar.

The arrested are – Md Habibur Rahman (53), son of Abul Hasnat of Shikarkhan village, Haripur, Mohammad Ali (18), son of Zahir Uddin of Chandghat area, Qutub Uddin (50), son of Idris Ali of Hemu Haudpara village, Ilias Ali (53), son of Ibrahim Ali of Haripur area, Sohel Ahmed (26), son of Soban of Lama Shyampur village.

According to sources from the Haripur Gasfield Army Camp, on March 27, around 12:30 am, the army arrested a total of 28 suspects from the scene of the incident in the Haripur Bazar area in the wake of an untoward incident. After the arrest, they were taken to the army camp for interrogation. Later, in addition to the statements of the 28 people in the army’s custody, the real accused were identified through other sources. After collecting this information, a case was filed at the Jaintapur Model Police Station on Saturday, March 29.

Army sources also informed that out of the 28 people arrested from the camp, only 5 people were found to be involved, so they were handed over to the Jaintapur Model Police Station.

In addition, it has been confirmed that the remaining 23 people have been handed over to their respective families in good health after receiving a bond.

Meanwhile, Jaintapur Model Police Station sources said that five accused have been handed over by the army in the incident of vandalizing an army vehicle in Haripur. A case has been filed with Jaintapur Model Police Station, naming 70 people and 150 unknown people as accused in the incident. Case No. 21/2025. He said that the five arrested people were handed over to the court on Saturday afternoon under the guard of the army and police.
