Myanmar has been hit by a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake. This natural disaster has caused widespread casualties. The British media outlet BBC quoted the junta government as saying that the death toll in the earthquake has reached 1,644 so far. In addition, 3,408 people have been injured and 139 are still missing. Bangladesh is extending its helping hand to Myanmar during this disaster.
A special flight of the Bangladesh Armed Forces Rescue Team is leaving for Myanmar tomorrow (Sunday) to provide emergency medicine, relief supplies, rescue and medical assistance in the wake of the earthquake damage, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.
The epicenter of the massive earthquake that occurred on Friday (March 28) was about 17 kilometers away from the city of Mandalay in Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometers. It caused extensive damage in various regions including Sagaing, Mandalay, Naypyidaw. A century-old bridge collapsed in Sagaing and buildings and mosques were destroyed in several places.
Myanmar’s state-run Radio and Television reported that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the State Administration Council, arrived in Mandalay by helicopter on Saturday morning and inspected the severely damaged areas. Earlier on Friday, he called for international assistance.
A state of emergency has been declared in six regions of Myanmar after the earthquake. The country’s military government has appealed for international assistance and is conducting rescue operations. However, limited information flow has made it difficult to assess the exact situation.
Meanwhile, the international community has expressed sympathy for the disaster in Myanmar and various countries and organizations have expressed their interest in providing assistance. The United Nations and other international organizations are preparing to assist in rescue and recovery operations.
