The United Kingdom has expressed its interest in hosting the 2035 Women’s World Cup. World football’s governing body FIFA has said that the tournament could be held in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed the matter at a UEFA meeting in Belgrade, Belgium on Thursday.
He also said that the United States and several countries in the CONCACAF region have shown interest in hosting the 2031 World Cup. 48 teams can participate in that tournament.
According to FIFA rules, if the 2031 World Cup is held in the Americas, the 2035 tournament must be held in Europe or Africa. Although Spain, Morocco and Portugal were mentioned in the running to host the tournament, they did not submit a bid in the end. The deadline for submitting bids was March 31, with only the United Kingdom officially applying.
FIFA President Infantino said, “I confirm that we have received a valid bid for the 2031 (United States) and 2035 (United Kingdom) World Cups.”
The BBC reported that the official bid to host the 2035 World Cup must be submitted this year. Then the final decision will be made through a vote at the FIFA Congress in 2026.
