Bangladesh has banned the import of several products from India. This ban also includes some products from Nepal and Bhutan. Bangladesh took this decision amid tensions in trade between the two countries.
The Customs Wing of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued this directive through a gazette published on Sunday. The NBR gave this information on Tuesday.
Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 last year during the unprecedented mass uprising of students and the public, took refuge in India. Since then, there has been an invisible tension in relations between the two countries. This is affecting the trade and commerce of the two countries.
In the meantime, the Indian government canceled the transshipment facility given to Bangladesh on April 8. On June 29, 2020, India had given this transshipment facility to Bangladesh, through which Bangladesh could easily send goods to a third country using Indian airports. Now Bangladesh is not getting this facility. That is, it will not be able to transship to a third country using Indian airports. However, there will be no complications in sending goods via land transit to Nepal-Bhutan.
According to the new notification, all products other than yarn and potatoes produced and processed in Nepal and Bhutan can be imported.
The products banned from import from India are duplex board, newsprint, kraft paper, cigarette paper, fish, yarn, potatoes, powdered milk, tobacco, radio-TV parts, bicycle and motor parts, Formica sheets, ceramic ware, sanitary ware, stainless steel ware, marble slabs and tiles and mixed fabrics.
However, the notification mentions that VAT registered bidi manufacturing industries will be able to import tobacco stalks as raw material.
At the same time, some serial numbers of the previously issued SRO No. 297-Law/2024/89/Customs notification have been amended. This updates the product list and keeps the ‘all exportable products’ as before.
