Bangladesh-India relations have been at the center of discussion since the fall of the Awami League government in the popular uprising of students. First of all, it is a big question how the relationship with India, Bangladesh’s biggest neighbor, will be in the coming days. Since the Awami League government was known as pro-Indian, it is another question how much India’s loyalty will be maintained with the new government. And the issue of Sheikh Hasina’s position in India after her ouster can also be a big obstacle in the progress of bilateral relations.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is also thinking about these issues. He also spoke about Bangladesh while discussing relations with neighboring countries at the launch of a book on India’s foreign policy in Delhi on Friday (August 30).
Speaking about Bangladesh, Jaishankar said in the speech of the chief guest, “It is natural to talk about it (Bangladesh) in the context of many recent interests. As you all know, our relations with Bangladesh have gone through ups and downs since independence. And whoever is in the government, I will maintain relations with him, that is natural.
However, the foreign minister of India did not hesitate to admit that the path of friendship in the changed political context, “but we have to accept that there has been a political change in Bangladesh.” And political change…can be disruptive. And our relationship should be seen from the context of mutual interest.
Incidentally, Jaishankar unveiled the cover of the book ‘Strategic Conundrums: Reshaping India’s Foreign Policy’ written by Rajeev Sikri, the former secretary of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, at the function of Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), a research institute based in New Delhi.
