The Daily Morning Sun Online Desk //

Eight members of the same family died in a fire at a residential hotel building called ‘Flourish Stay B’ in the House Rani area of Malviya Nagar in south Delhi, India, on Wednesday.

Vivek Agarwal, a resident of Sector 46 of Gurugram on the outskirts of the capital Delhi and a chartered accountant, had gone to visit his father who is undergoing treatment in Delhi. His father is currently admitted to Max Hospital in Delhi. Vivek was accompanied by his wife Tarjani Agarwal, two daughters Jeevisha and Varya and four other relatives.

Vivek had taken two rooms in the Flourish Stay B, which was damaged in the fire yesterday. The entire family was having breakfast in the hotel restaurant when the fire broke out. All eight people died in the fire.

After the death of eight members of the family, the only surviving member of these close relatives is now Vivek’s 80-year-old father Radhe Shyam Agarwal.

Other family members went to the hospital yesterday afternoon to collect the bodies. However, authorities said the bodies would be handed over only after DNA samples were collected.

The family’s house in Sector 46 in Gurugram was completely empty yesterday. The tragic accident has cast a shadow of deep mourning over the entire area.

The fire broke out at the Delhi hotel around 8:30 am and quickly spread throughout the five-storeyed building. At least 21 people, including 12 foreign nationals, were killed and dozens more injured. It is understood that around 40 guests were in the building at the time of the fire, most of whom were sleeping.

Delhi Police said the building had only one entrance. The windows were permanently sealed. The main door was sensor-operated. After the fire spread, the guests had very limited exits.

The hotel was licensed under the Delhi government’s ‘Bed and Breakfast’ scheme, which allows a maximum of six rooms to be operated in a building. However, according to NDTV sources, the Flourish Stay B hotel was operating a total of 25 rooms, including the basement, at the time of the fire.
