Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir has stated that there is no alternative to enhancing the skills and capabilities of police personnel to combat cybercrime. He noted that in the current era of information technology, new technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), deepfakes, encrypted communication systems, and cloud computing—have opened up new possibilities while simultaneously creating fresh challenges for law enforcement agencies.

The IGP made these remarks on Sunday while inaugurating a ‘Training of Trainers’ course on cybercrime investigation at the Police Staff College in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Speaking as the chief guest, Ali Hossain Fakir observed that criminals are misusing technology to commit offenses such as cyber-fraud, online financial crimes, data theft, hacking, online harassment, and digital extortion. He emphasized that adapting policing methods to address the rising tide of cybercrime is the need of the hour. Furthermore, acquiring investigative capabilities to tackle cybercrime is essential for modern policing.

Addressing the trainee police officers, the IGP said, “Through this course, you will not only acquire technical expertise but also develop skills in training others and communicating effectively. The knowledge and skills gained here must be disseminated among other investigators. If you effectively train other investigators, the number of personnel capable of investigating cybercrime cases will increase manifold.”

Presided over by Police Staff College Rector and Additional IG Kazi Fazlul Karim, the event was attended by CID Chief Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain as a special guest.
